Steve Bartman should throw out first pitch at Wrigley

Who should throw out the ritualized first pitch at the World Series at Wrigley? Steve Bartman, that's who. Can you think of someone better? No, you can't. There would be justice in it, and forgiveness and redemption. Because if there's one Cubs fan deserving of it, it's Steve. He paid for it with all the hatred and anger poured on him that night when the Cubs blew a chance to get into the series in 2003. All he did was reach for a foul ball.

Grandpa drinks 32-year-old beer that he saved for a Cubs World Series win

A single Coors beer from 1984 still existed up until Wednesday night. When the Chicago Cubs lost in the NLCS to the San Diego Padres, this man stored away his beer and vowed not to drink it until the day the Cubs finally won the World Series. He probably didn't think it would take 32 years. But, it did. And he kept his promise when he cracked open the disgustingly old beer and ceremoniously poured as family watched.

As killings surge, Chicago police solve fewer homicides

After April Campbell’s 16-year-old son was shot to death in May about four blocks from their home, she took it upon herself to help police find the killer. Campbell, 49, disabled with a spinal injury, grabbed her walker and went door to door on the city’s South Side trying to piece together a motive and gather evidence. She found witnesses and urged them to talk to police. She collected Facebook posts by people who seemed to claim credit for his killing. She tracked down a shop owner who had a security camera that might have recorded her son’s killer.

Emanuel Tells Undocumented Immigrants Chicago 'Always Will Be A Sanctuary City'

Even as President-elect Donald Trump vows to immediately deport 2 to 3 million undocumented immigrants when he takes office in January, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is reaffirming Chicago’s commitment as a so-called “sanctuary city.” “To be clear about what Chicago is, it always will be a sanctuary city,” the mayor said Monday. Emanuel sought to reassure those worried about Trump’s interview on “60 Minutes,” in which he said he plans to immediately deport or incarcerate up to 3 million undocumented immigrants who have criminal records.

Bored, Broke and Armed: Clues to Chicago’s Gang Violence

The young men who call themselves Gangster Disciples skirted by an empty lot. They marched past a “Stop the Violence” mural painted on a corner store, coming to a halt when they saw members of a rival gang, the Black Disciples. It was late September on a busy South Side intersection, and now tensions were escalating, gang members who were there recalled. There were glares, they said. Then words. “You’re a rat,” a Black Disciple said to one of the Gangster Disciples who he believed had given the police information about him.

Something incredible just happened in Chicago

It's being called a Christmas miracle, and it happened just in time for Christmas for one Chicago family with a sick child. The phrase “Christmas miracle” gets thrown around a lot this time of year, but what just happened to a 5-month-old boy suffering from a rare disease may qualify. Little Daniel McCabe was at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, waiting for a liver transplant that could save his life due to a rare liver disorder called biliary atresia. As it turns out, he didn’t have to wait long at all.

Judge denies bond for 4 in Facebook Live beating

A judge rebuked four black people accused of beating a mentally disabled white man and broadcasting the attack on Facebook, sternly asking, "Where was your sense of decency?" before denying their attorneys' pleas to set bail so they might be released from jail. "I find each of you a danger to yourself and society," Cook County Circuit Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil said, sounding baffled that the suspects who hold jobs, attend school and, in one case, care for a brother in a wheelchair could be charged...

Slain 8-Year-Old Alleged Horrific Abuse in Her Diary Before She Was Found Dead: ‘I Hate This Life’

Like many girls her age, 8-year-old Gizzell Ford kept a diary. The cover was striped with rainbows, and she used a pink marker to record her thoughts. For the first few entries, Gizzell — known to friends as “Gizzy” — wrote about typical third-grade things: jumping rope, school teachers, clothes and friends. But her life in Chicago seemed to derail in the summer of 2013, as she began detailing abuse she allegedly suffered at the hands of her grandmother.

The Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune reported the city had passed such a milestone on Sunday morning for the first time in more than five years. Police say they found him lying face down Saturday in a vacant lot about a block from where he lived in the Austin neighborhood on the city's west side.
