My experiment plant related please read? Onion

So asking from here, I am cultivating a Onion in water and want to find out what will make it Grow Quicker? Besides normal means, what kind of chemicals could be added for rapid growing? I don't want to buy hormone ingredients I want a makeshift compound of sorts. So do you Add what the plant type (onion) is composed of?
