Barcelona is giving each of its poorest citizens a universal basic income

The district of Besós in Barcelona, Utrecht in the Netherlands and the Finnish city of Helsinki are all reportedly set to trial a universal basic income scheme. Residents will be given money for two years to lift them above the breadline as the scheme looks to investigate “innovative and creative solutions”. Each area will be been given €13m (£11m) from the European Union to fund the scheme, which will grant 1,000 randomly selected low-income households between €400 and €525 (£350 and £455) per month.

Messi's Spanish jail sentence for tax fraud to stand

A 21-month jail term handed down last year to Barcelona and Argentina footballer Lionel Messi has been confirmed by Spain's Supreme Court, but he is unlikely to go to prison. Messi and his father Jorge, who manages his finances, were both convicted in 2016 of defrauding Spain of €4.1m (£3.5m; $4.6m) in taxes. Jorge Messi's jail term was reduced because he paid some of the taxes.

Barcelona protest to support migrants draws thousands

Some 160,000 people have demonstrated in Barcelona to demand the government allow more refugees into Spain from war-hit areas such as Syria. Marchers carrying placards and banners- many in the Catalan language - accused the Madrid government of dragging its feet over the issue. They say it has not honoured its pledge made in 2015 to allow more than 17,000 refugees into Spain within two years. Over that time, Spain has accepted only about 1,100 refugees.

    Las Calles Hablan

A lot of the story comes from the street artists themselves. They were always generous with their time and information. They developed the process, they wanted this story to be told.
