During a routine flyover, a surveillance crew spotted the people waving a makeshift flag on an island in the Bahamas. They had survived on coconuts, conchs and rats, the Coast Guard said.

Waters rose, beating against the house as a family of three hunkered on the second floor. Hour by hour, they checked the staircase to see how many steps had been lost to the water.

"97 dogs are inside my house and 79 of them are inside my master bedroom."

A luxury music festival in the Bahamas, with tickets costing up to $12,000 (£9,200), has now been officially postponed after reports of no security and cancelled flights. Fyre Festival, co-organised by Ja Rule, promised a "cultural moment created from a blend of music, art and food". Tickets included a flight from Miami, a stay in a "geodesic dome" and activities including yoga and kayaking. Festival-goers have described the event as a "complete disaster".

Hurricane Matthew remains a formidable Category 4 storm as it crosses eastern Cuba and heads toward a potentially destructive encounter with The Bahamas on Wednesday. A hurricane watch is in effect for much of Florida's East Coast. There is still much uncertainty about Matthew's path near and beyond the Southeast U.S. coast, but hurricane impacts remain possible over a huge swath of coastline.
