Fellow Snappers, I'm moving into a new home soon. What precautions should I take before purchasing the house?

Definitely dish out the money for some inspections. I'm not sure if this is already a common knowledge thing, but I remember my brother's inspector found some black mold in their house and the previous owners had to pay for the removal of it.

At least from what I remember.

This is what I came here to say. Don't be cheap with an inspector. Spend a decent amount of money to get a good one. If you feel it might be necessary get a structural engineer to inspect the foundation and frame too.

Make sure to check that the neighborhood isn't too noisy.

Off topic, but are we calling ourselves snappers now?

Make sure you can live with the loan you take out. Avoid anything "variable interest". That means they'll increase your payments and you'll be more likely to put your house on foreclosure.

Before you begin doing any major work on your house, have a contingency and lots of it! You never know what you'll uncover once you start remodeling/demoing the house!
