It depends on your definition of remote. I've been to a small village in Spain that I had to explain how it was spelled to the bus drivers in the biggest city about 10 km from it. About 2 km from the village was a mountain with an interpretation center, and the leftovers of a camp used by resistance to Franco's regime during the 1930's. Awesome place, but technically, it wasn't really far from civilisation, just unknown, even to the local populace. I'm Canadian by the way.
I've also been to small hunting camps that were about 60 - 70 km from the nearest habitation of any form, but that's not really unusual, although it seems closer to the generally accepted definition of "remote".
