"I shouldn't have to do [blank]!" Yes, in a fair world lots of things would be much smoother, more fair, easier. But sometimes it's going to take extra leg work to see through to a goal you want (or need) - and arguing that you won't do it because someone else dropped the ball isn't going to win anyone over.
"It's not against the law." In my experience, this almost always means "I know what I'm doing is morally wrong, but I don't care and you can't stop me." The worst kind of excuse.
"I didn't have time to do that." No, you had the time it was just lower on your list of priorities than whatever else you did during that time. So just say that.
