Happy Death Day to the Nintendo Famicom (1983-1994)

Nintendo sometimes makes a big deal about milestones—Mario's 30th, Zelda's 25th, and the "Year of Luigi" are all recent examples that come to mind—but one thing you won't usually hear them mention is how long it's been since something went away. Luckily, my encyclopedic knowledge of pointless factoids stands at the ready!

A Modder Is Trying To Recreate The Legend Of Zelda In Doom

Doom and Zelda don’t have a lot in common beyond heroes killing a bunch of monsters. But one modder, Exkodius, has spent the last three years trying to recreate the original The Legend of Zelda in the Doom engine.

The latest NPD video game hardware sales in the United States have started to trickle in for December 2018. Obviously it was an extremely busy month for the three console manufacturers during the Christmas period and it was the Nintendo Switch which came in first. Nintendo’s Switch Online is slowly turning into an amazing classic games service

Nintendo is terrible when it comes to the internet, and in a lot of ways, the Switch Online subscription service is no different. There are annoying restrictions around cloud saves, for instance, and voice chat is relegated to a mobile app. It can feel archaic, especially compared to Xbox Live or PlayStation Plus. But there’s one aspect of the service that has become an indispensable part of how I use my Switch: the free retro games.

How to use the hidden web browser on Nintendo Switch

We all know that the Nintendo Switch is a fantastic little piece of hardware. However, there is a smattering of small complaints about the device. One such gripe I have heard about more than a few times is that the Switch does not offer any sort of built-in web browser. As far as I am concerned, it is totally justified to expect just about any handheld device to come with a browser.

For Today’s Kids, Playing Nintendo in the Classroom Isn’t Just a Dream

All those ‘90s kids who used to try sneaking their Game Boys into class and playing discreetly under their desks—to no avail, of course—may soon be feeling like they were born in the wrong decade. The gaming devices aren’t being treated as contraband anymore, at least not in the 100 K-12 schools that have welcomed Nintendo products into their classrooms this year to help students develop collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Future Business Shift Could See Nintendo Move Away From Home Console Development

Shuntaro Furukawa replaced Tatsumi Kimishima last year as Nintendo's global president. Shortly after he was appointed, Furukawa mentioned how he "grew up" with Nintendo and would respect its traditions: originality and flexibility. With this in mind, during a recent interview with Nikkei - as translated by Nintendo Everything - Furukawa touched on these company traditions when asked a series of questions about Nintendo's past, present and future.

Fitness Boxing Rated T for Teen for Accurately Depicting the Female Form

For a game about encouraging people to move, the ESRB seems pretty hell-bent on making sure children don't play Fitness Boxing. As the spiritual successor to Wii Fit, Fitness Boxing has–naturally–flown under the radar. Its release seems to have been aimed at cashing in on those of us who are looking to start off 2019 with a workout routine or, at least, some way to justify our “new year, new me” attitude.

Apple’s Next Big Move? It Should Buy Nintendo

Apple needs its next big thing—fast. With its shares down nearly a third in the past three months and the financial guidance bombshell earlier this year, the burning question turns to what Apple (ticker: AAPL) can do to spark a turnaround. On Jan. 2, the smartphone maker lowered its December-quarter revenue guidance 8% below the Wall Street consensus. The announcement confirmed the market’s worst fears that a negative growth year for the iPhone was ahead.

Nintendo's Honesty Around Metroid Prime 4 Sets An Important Standard

In a surprising twist this morning, Nintendo made an incredibly transparent announcement. Development on Metroid Prime 4, it read, had halted and was to begin again under Retro Studios, the United States-based developer of the original Metroid Prime games. In a statement delivered by Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo’s General Manager of Planning and Development, we learned that although Nintendo found it very regrettable, the company didn’t feel the current progress of Metroid Prime 4 was up to their standards for the series.

Nintendo’s NES Classic and SNES Classic are going out of production

Nintendo’s NES and SNES Classic consoles are going away after the holidays — probably for good this time. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter this week, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé said that the mini-consoles will be going out of production, and once the holiday season stock sells out, they won’t be restocked. Nintendo isn’t new to supply issues. The NES Classic immediately sold out when it was first released in November 2016, with resellers charging hundreds of dollars for the popular product.

It can be a welcome feeling, realizing that a difficult task is now made trivial. But it can be equally infuriating, knowing that the hours behind you have been ground out doing unnecessary work.

    Nintendo Had a Fantastic 2018

Some may have thought of this year as a down year for Nintendo. They came out with a number of ports for the Nintendo Switch from the Wii U, and although they were good, they lacked original titles. That all changed at the end of the year though. Torna: The Golden Country, which was a DLC add-on for Xenoblade Chronicles 2, was also released as a standalone game. Octopath Traveler was one of the best games of the year.

Metroid Prime 4 Development Restarting With Retro Studios

Metroid Prime 4's development is restarting from the beginning with the help of Retro Studios, developers of the original Metroid Prime games. Announced by Nintendo, the decision was made because this fourth entry "has not reached the standards we seek in a sequel to the Metroid Prime series." Due to this reason, Nintendo has decided to have producer Kensuke Tanabe "work in trust and collaboration with the studio that developed the original Metroid Prime series, Retro Studios in the United States, and restart development from the beginning."

Nintendo Switch will soon pass the N64 in lifetime sales

Nintendo sold 9.41 million Switch consoles in the three months leading up to December 31st, 2018, bringing lifetime sales to 32.27 million. That's just 660,000 short of the immensely-popular Nintendo 64 and well beyond both the Gamecube and Wii U. The holiday quarter was a big improvement over 2017, when the company shifted 7.23 million Switch consoles. Still, it seems unlikely that the company will hit its 20 million sales target for the current financial year.

Diablo III Is Coming To Switch Later This Year

The day that was prophesied by a light switch is finally upon us: Diablo III is coming to Nintendo Switch this year. The news was meant to be announced tomorrow, but appeared today on Forbes in a post that’s since been deleted. Diablo III Eternal Collection on Switch will include the original game, the Reaper of Souls expansion, the Rise of the Necromancer pack, and all updates the game has received thus far. You’ll also be able to get an armor set that makes you look like Ganondorf from The Legend of Zelda, because I guess Ganondorf would be mad about the devil muscling in on his “crown prince of evil” turf.

Super Mario Party's use of two Switch screens is a technological marvel

Nintendo knows exactly what it does well. Innovative technology combined with charming gameplay has always been at the heart of the company's philosophy. It's been an extraordinarily successful combination - and one which was once again on display at this year's Gamescom, as I discovered when playing Super Mario Party's new two-tablet mode, Toad's Rec Room.

Super Mario Party brings the franchise back to greatness

Mario Party is, at this point, a 20-year-old Nintendo franchise that feels like a constant staple of every system. Along with console staples like Mario Kart and Mario’s various sports outings, a Mario Party for Nintendo Switch felt inevitable. The game’s contents feel inevitable, too — there are have been 10 numbered entries on consoles before it, after all. You play on a digital board game with your friends as Mario universe avatars, and you all end up possibly disliking each other at the end.
