How to Help Your Teen Achieve Academic Success

Here’s how you can help your teen see to one of the main stressors in his life, which is, achieving academic success

  • Achieve Academic Success

As a teen enters high school, the stressors on them only increase. So much emphasis is placed on getting good grades, getting their lives sorted out and coming to terms with who they’re going to be. This may be a period of time where teens like to exercise independence but the truth is that this is a vulnerable time for them, and they do need all the help they can get- even if they don’t ask for it. Here’s how you can help your teen see to one of the main stressors in his life, which is, achieving academic success.

    Conferences

Open-house meetings are a great way to get yourself informed on the school’s activities, programs and policies. It also helps you get to know more about the teacher’s and what they will be expecting. While conferences are usually a place where behavioural issues and academic problems are discussed, it’s a great way to outline how best to support your child and root out his weak spots. So your first step would be to get more involved and find out exactly what you’re contending with.

    The School Website

The school website should ideally give you a plethora of useful information. For example, the school calendar, test dates, sign-up information for sports, clubs and, at times, even access to your child’s grades and missing assignments. This is a great way to keep tabs on your child’s progress. It should also have additional student and parent resources so if you want to be kept in the loop, the website is a pretty good place to start.

    Homework

As their schooling years come to an end and homework assignments and tests become more and more of a serious issue to them, they might find it hard to juggle their academics, sports and social lives (and even possibly jobs, if some are working part time). Support them with their school work during this time by making sure they do their work in a quiet, well-lit zone, with no electronics in sight. Keep checking up and if you want, even sit down with them and see how they’re balancing their load.

    Organizational Skills

Teach your teens the importance and convenience of organizing their work. It can start with something simple like having a file and book for each subject. Then move on to daily to-do lists and creating a calendar that not only marks assignment deadlines and test dates but also extracurricular activities and other events. Make sure they update it regularly so that it forms a habit.

    Helping

When those grades start slipping yet you want your child to be amongst the VCE top scorers, then make that effort to put some time in by his side. Offer to help with simple quizzes, practice tests, drawing information etc. so that you can help make the work more engaging to him. This will ease the workload. If it’s past your comprehension then simply contact his teacher for some extra guidance.

These are some of the simplest ways you can help your teen achieve his academic success!
