Really unexpected based on Medium's recent success.
Convincing argument, though, that they need to get paying their writers right first. It's a worthwhile core mission, and it's not like there are a lot of close competitors in that narrowly-defined space. ReaderSupportedNews? My guess is that Medium is going to offer a subscription service and tip out authors from those revenues, like Flattr was talking about doing for the whole web.
