I just upgraded to my first smartphone from some shitty Samsung flip phone. I'm actually a very tech-y person, I work as a web developer, I just never upgraded to a smartphone because a) I'm poor as shit and b) I don't give a shit. I was functioning just fine without one, and didn't see a need to upgrade. But I eventually gave in.
The 640 is what I decided on getting. I got one for my wife and I. My reasons for getting it were I was looking for a phone that was:
a) Cheap as shit. Check on this. Got two for $70 total through a deal Metro PCS was doing.
b) A great phone first and foremost. I wanted a phone more than I wanted a mini computer. From what I was reading, this phone does all the phone things very well.
c) Took great pictures. I know there are phones with better cameras out there, but honestly, this one does just fine for taking pictures that will serve mainly as memories of our kids.
d) Easy as shit to use. My wife is technologically-impaired, so I wanted to make sure she could use it easily from day 1. Check so far on this as well.
e) Great battery. Check on this.
f) Removable batter and room for extra storage. Check on both of these.
Loving the phone so far! Hope it holds up for years to come!
Yeah, mostly the same reasons I got the 710 several years ago. Cheap enough and still did all the major things well. Only thing I'd be worried about (haven't followed release news that closely) is if you're interested in the app ecosystem, how the transition to WinPho 10 will be handled, if at all. That's the only disappointment for me with the 710, it never got even the WinPho 8 update. :(
