Maglev trains: why aren't we gliding home on hovering carriages?
It is lightning quick, clean, green – and expensive. But shouldn’t we think again about magnetic levitation?

Interesting. The article points out that having to install infrastructure (track etc) from scratch means that there is little political will to do this. Encouragingly though, they point out also that some Asian cities have maglev trains, and that others have maglev projects under construction. So while it's rare, maglev is being used successfully in some places.
