The author hit the nail on the head and summarized the entire situation in one sentence without even intending: "What they want is what my father-in-law had: steady, stable, full-time jobs that deliver a solid middle-class life to the 75% of Americans who don’t have a college degree." A majority of the voters are uneducated, yet want to be paid the same as educated citizens. So of course they went with an ignorant candidate. If we had a better education system and made policies that encourage education we would be in a much better situation. Instead we have a stigma to going to college and that continues the cycle.
