The day before the presidential election everyone believed Hillary Clinton would win. But nothing happened in American society between the day before and the day after the election. The unexpectedness of Trump’s victory was due to one phenomenon alone: around 3 per cent of voters who favoured Trump were unwilling to reveal their intentions to the pollsters. That’s all.

Trump supporters were just tired of the same ole, same ole, as were many Dems judging by their turnout, and or votes.
In the "rust belt" alone you will see that one issue could have turned the election, gun control. In Ohio 85% of gun owners voted Trump, (so far the only breakdown I've seen on this issue) Anecdotally, I have many acquaintances/friends that are gun owners, all regardless of political affiliation deem their gun rights/ownership among their top concerns. It's not an issue one has to prod, conversations to this issue, are frequent and unanimous.
Gun ownership is not partisan.
