I think we should not ban books, I think it is always hard to decide what we read, or understand, but I am a big believer in no limits to what we can know.
When was this six month survey? I don't recall seeing it available? I know that PBS' primary demographic is either children under 10 or adults over 55. So if this survey was taken from these numbers, I believe that represents these demographics well. What would the best loved novel for the 10-55 age group be though?
My top 5: Foundation (1-3), Red Mars (1-3), Hyperion (1-4), Dune (1), and Flowers for Algernon.
I'd put Flowers For Aalgernon at #1. I missed the last episode so it's nice to know which book won.
