The Utley Rule: If the defender, in the act of turning a double play, has not yet tagged the base ahead of the runner, the runner may change course as he sees fit in order to collide with or otherwise incapacitate or interfere with the defender, provided the runner waves to the base, wherever it may be in relation to his body. If, in pursuit of the defender's body, the runner is rendered unable to touch the base after completing his incapacitating or interfering action, he shall be awarded the base as a reward for his "hustle" and or "good clean play." This rule supersedes, and in no instance shall the umpires or other officials refer to, the rulebook section on interference in the course of a double play.
