    RS-485 Bus Details

Low-voltage communication buses are critical to most networked automation systems and when they fail they are a huge pain to troubleshoot. We use them because the cables are cheap, but you might end up paying for it with troubleshooting labour later. Ethernet/IP based communication is becoming much more common, but we'll probably still see serial busses for some time yet.

The results from the paper (my bolding):

A 10% increase in provincial minimum alcohol prices was associated with an 18.81% (95% CI: ±17.99%, p < .05) reduction in alcohol-related traffic violations, a 9.17% (95% CI: ±5.95%, p < .01) reduction in crimes against persons, and a 9.39% (95% CI: ±3.80%, p < .001) reduction in total rates of crime outcomes examined. There was no significant association between minimum alcohol prices and non–alcohol-related traffic violations (p > .05). Densities of private liquor stores were not significantly associated with alcohol-involved traffic violations or crimes against persons, though they were with non–alcohol-related traffic violations.

I was a little skeptical at first, but the bolded section above is interesting. Although, it makes me notice that the other crimes are not qualified in the same way - just "crime in general" rather than alcohol related.

The last sentence sounds like a correlation without causation, which is an interesting tidbit for the recent debate in Ontario regarding alcohol being available more widely than previously.

I was ready to look elsewhere with the latest Reddit drama, and Voat had the greatest visibility. It seems pretty consistently recognized as the top alternative as far as I can see. I think that must be residual recognition from the FPH fallout, which is interesting. This whole series of exoduses might make an interesting article on social networks in general later!

I kept searching for other alternatives simply because Voat was offline for more than a day. If it had been online, I may have had to quit the Internet and go outside.

I have a related problem. Sure, I don't remember childhood memories very well like is fairly typical. On top of that, experience has taught me to mistrust all of my memories in general, so even the things that I think I do remember, I don't trust.

People can be so convinced that they remember things accurately and still be completely wrong. It's really worrying!

I made a stir-fry out of udon noodles, chicken, bell peppers, red onion, garlic, mushrooms, , soya sauce, and butter. The secret ingredient is the butter. It's very easy to make, and I can get several days worth of meals out of it! I'm motivated to buy a pan twice as large as my largest so I can get twice the amount of food out of it - I can't produce enough to need to freeze anything yet.

    Source code is here: https://github.com/isosphere/Investment-Rebalancer

I wrote it in Python. It's really "stupid": it just brute forces the optimum solution. I have another function in there that'll do it a lot faster, but it's not as good.

Couch Potato (or general) Investment Fund Rebalancer

I'm a fan of couch-potato investment (http://canadiancouchpotato.com/) but balancing every now and then is hard. I made this little tool that'll take your current distribution and budget for reinvestment and find the optimum way for you to spend your budget to get you closer to your target distribution - without selling any current holdings. Every other calculator just naively divides what you have invested in Bucket X by your total investment.

There was a brief chat on here last night about this topic in general, without specific mention of policy here: http://snapzu.com/t/lounge/tribepost/VGBH55R/debate-discussion-free-speech-on-websites

My take away from it is that it's good to ban hate and illegal content. Not "undesirable" content, but specifically hate-centric content. I'm not talking about whatever the policy here is, though, just what I think it should be. So I think people should be able to have tribes and content about things I don't like at all and that disturb me so long as it's legal and it's not out of hate.

I'm making a go of trying a new Internet-home, too. I don't think Reddit is going away right now, but it's good to have diversity.

An interesting feature. It's been built into Firefox and the like for awhile now, though; usually they are called keywords. You create a bookmark using the URL of a search page on the target site and replace the part where the search term goes with a "%s". Then you can define a keyword for that search bookmark and do "wiki mushrooms" in your search bar to search for mushrooms on Wikipedia, for example.

I could see advantages to having a central site handle all of the different internal search engines, though. URLs may change over time, and maybe I only want to search some sites infrequently which would be made slightly faster this way. Not quite enough to make me switch, but interesting.
