I lump them into the Susan G. Komen foundation, they are more scam than charity. Something like 70% goes to executive costs while the rest is divided up for actual charity. One of my grandfathers liked telling the story about when he was in the military and came home getting off a train the Red Cross was set up on the platform and was offering donuts and coffee for something like 25¢ so he passed and then the Salvation Army was offering the same thing just outside the station for free with a donation request of a nickel. Ever since then he has always hated the Red Cross and we had to hear that donut story a thousand times.
