Soaring prison population prompts Thailand to re-think 'lost' drug war
Somsak Sreesomsong was 18 when he was jailed for selling illegal drugs. Now, turning 30, he is not yet half way through his 33-year sentence at Bangkok's high-security Klong Prem prison. Somsak was "just a kid, not a big-time dealer", his older brother Panit told Reuters after a visit to the jail. "We're also serving time, waiting for him to get out so he can help the family." "It's failed everywhere else, why not try it here?" Said no intelligent person ever.
It doesn't fail to keep prices high.
The reason is simple. The taxes are so high that it makes the product expensive in a retail location. This, in turn, keeps the black market going with its high prices. That said, the fact is that on the wholesale side the price of cannabis has dropped 300% in the past 8 years. Most end-users don't see that relief because dispensary owners are greedy fucks.
