I think this is mostly from hipsters trying to live in the 'off the gird' life without understanding a thing about it. I raise chickens, and I'll talk to them and care for them, but you better believe I am sanitizing my hands, and taking a hot shower after handling them. They carry all kinds of parasites and diseases.
I agree. I worked with them at an internship and while they are awesome birds I always made sure I washed my hands whenever I was done handling them. Usually I washed them again before I ate as well just to make sure.
