It's insane how much further everything that "relates" to guns stepped over the century( Red dots and prism sights come to mind, just look how much more "hi-tech" stuff, saw a guy with super futuristic looking rifle at our DFW gun Range!) yet how pretty much the same basic principles behind how guns work stayed(modern AR15 is not that different compared to what was used in 30s and 40s...
