The nations of the world have sold off their names as branding tools. But it turns out that real-world politics have consequences, even when it comes to URLs. In 2012, the US imposed sanctions on Syria, for, among other things, their occupation of Lebanon, their apparent support for terrorist groups, and an intent to pursue weapons of mass destruction. One Slate reporter pointed out that this meant bad news, not for the Syrian people, but for a little startup called Artsy.
