How CGI changed reality on screen
James Cameron’s underwater adventure The Abyss (1989) is widely considered the first film to have successfully made extensive use of computer-generated imagery, or CGI, to show audiences something they could never witness otherwise. The film’s visual trump card shows a deep-sea explorer, played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, encountering a sentient strand of water – a transparent, shimmering tube that reacts to her every movement.
