‘Release cards’ turn inmates and their families into profit stream
In 2013 Gregg Cavaluzzi walked out of federal prison with nothing more than the clothes he wore going in five years earlier and a Chase-branded debit card holding what remained of money sent by family members and the meager pay he’d earned working in the prison library. “They simply gave me the debit card and said ‘Your money’s on it,’” he recalled.

This shit is sick and needs to stop. For-profit prisons go against everything the USA was supposed to stand for way back in the day. If you think about it, this is just a another tax... the 'friends or relatives in prison tax', and it was certainly pushed through without any representation. I have a good friend in prison and it costs to use the phone, check email, use the fucking gym equipment, nothing is free. All the fuckers do all the time is hit up friends and family for cash to not lose touch, and don't even say "oh, he committed crimes, fuck him"... Sure, laws were broken, and he's paying for that fact, but the rest of the people that know him also have to pay, and that's fucked up.
