Challenge: Mun flyby with free return

I mentioned the other day in a comment, we ought have challenges in /t/kerbalspaceprogram. Challenges are fun. You learn stuff, you can show off, or just get you something to do even after you've done everything. So here's one not too hard for you all.

  • The Challenge

You are to fly by the Mun on a free return trajectory, Apollo style. This is when you set up your transfer burn in such a way that, after the burn is complete, if you don't turn on your engine again you will fall back to the Earth for re-entry. You don't usually need to do this in Kerbal Space Program, but in real life it is very much desirable: if your engine won't start again after you shut it down, this will save your life.

So. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is as follows:

    • Launch a crewed rocket, insert yourself in orbit, yadda yadda. Perform a transfer burn to the Mun.
    • Once the transfer burn is complete, you are not to turn on your engine again. In fact it's better if you just detach it. You only need the capsule for the rest of the trip.
    • You have to fly by the Mun below 100 Km.
    • You have to coast back to Kerbin, re-enter and land. Your kerbals must survive.

I don't intend this to have a "winner," it's just for fun... but hey, let's say, if you manage the lower Mun periapsis, you win. Mine was 99 Km, as you can see, so if you do this at all I'm set to lose already, haha.

Feel free to use any mods you like. Post pictures. Off you go.

  • At the Mun, with no engine *and* a good chance of living! At the Mun, with no engine *and* a good chance of living!
