Can planes crash into these things?
Yes. But you have to be an ace pilot to hit them dead on.
No they would be up much higher than planes are capable of. As long as there's no chance of getting in collision with airplanes I'm fine with it.
Google has boosted the balloons’ potential altitude range from about 800 meters to a couple of kilometers.
That's still within the airspace for aircraft but they'll NOTAM the airspace off so it shouldn't be a problem.

Rhode Island is a tiny state but that's still really impressive.
Yup been there, it's only like 1200 square miles or something.
