Kumbh Mela: The Biggest Gathering on Earth
Every 12 years, the Naga Sadhus—or sky clad—Hindu monks celebrate the Kumbh Mela festival, at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. The pilgrimage, in which the monks bathe in holy waters to wash away their sins, is held once every three years in one of four rotating locations. Makar Sankranti, observed on Jan. 14 this year, is an annual harvest festival marking the start of spring and recognized throughout India.
