I'm all for removing the flag from public places, and I'm all for hoping that less people put it on their cars. However at a point I think we need to stop a bit, and realize that we can't change history. Not showing re-runs of a show, potentially, for this reason just seems wrong. There are a lot of racist things in old loony toons, but we don't white wash them, or ignore them. It's a thing, it happened, and we are trying to be better than that, but we can't just pretend it never happened, and completely ignore it.
Yeah, what can we do? We love to sweep stuff under the rug and act like nothing happened.
Totally agree. Would it be that bad to just have a disclaimer before the show (preferably with the Dukes of Hazzard narrator) saying something like "See that flag there on the roof of the General Lee, friends? So, you see, that's the way it went in Hazzard back in 1979, but it ain't there anymore, so cool your heels, and enjoy the show."
It's like it's tipped from totally legitimate cleansing of the public square to a weird 1984-esque cultural purge of history. For instance, the guy who owns the actual original Dukes of Hazzard car, he's having its roof repainted... with a US flag.
