Steve Biko (Happy Birthday!) OC
“The most powerful weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.” Steve Biko was an anti-apartheid activist in South Africa in the 1960s and 70s, and he was eventually brutally killed after being arrested, making him a martyr of the cause and further exposing the apartheid regime. Reading about his life and death really puts this quote in perspective. The most profound part about this piece is that it’s only been thirty five years since his death, and two years prior, he was banned by the regime in an attempt to silence him, yet here we are quoting his very words.
