If they'd have released it as a limited edition I'd have tried a little harder to get one. It's a shame it's done already.
The popularity and the fact nobody could keep it in stock probably gave Nintendo a kick in the pants this was a bad idea, this would cannibalize their virtual console sales of older titles that were included on the device, and since they tie the purchase to the console for VC titles, they would rather you buy all those games again on your Switch, like you did for your Wii U and Wii.
