Commented in The US Military Has Developed a Tooth Microphone That's So Stealth It's a Little Unnerving

This is "small"? In which world? My Airpods are of the same size and they not only microphones, but are also pretty good speakers and that is the only reason for their BIG size. If they weren't speaker they could be several times smaller. The "military technology microphone" alone should be much smaller.

Commented in Can Science Cure Aging?

The issue is that even if (when) it will be classified as a disease, aging does not kill you per se. Just makes you weaker. There is always something else that kills you.

Commented in Human survival cannot be left to politicians. We're losing our life support systems

Society level decisions are always politics. There are always numerous ways to solve any given problem. And decision needs to be made which way to take, because each comes with it's own set of pros and cons, some part of the society will always be disadvantaged due to this or that decision while another part will take the most advantage. Always.

Even dividing Thanksgiving turkey in a big family is politics, and you expect to have global problems to be solved politics-free? Wishful thinking.

Commented in Scientific publishing is a rip-off. We fund the research – it should be free

So go ahead and create a free editorial house, what is stopping you? They are not government agencies, you don't need special permission to create one, so just go ahead and create "Nature" competitor.

Haven't you thought that if everything is so simple, then why why isn't anyone doing this for free? Why all those scientists keep sending their papers to those publishers that end up hiding them behind paywall?

Have you thought for a second about that? That there is some incentive that is more than just silly scientists sending their hard worked papers to greedy publishers because of ... what?

And did you know that you only need to pay for access if you want to read it from publisher? Did you know you could just contact author and ask him to share the research with you and author can send it to you that without publisher's permission and for free (provided he wants to give his research to you for free of course)?

The problem is the same as internet newspaper. You don't need to pay to know the news, but if you want to read certain newspaper it will bill you money. News itself is free. The work newspaper does is not. If you are not happy with some newspaper, maybe just don't buy it?

Commented in Research shows that knowingly taking placebos can be highly beneficial

Because homeopathy drugs were sold as "cure everything". People were taking them thinking they can treat serious diseases, which they can't, so people were losing time and money when conventional medicine could actually provenly cure them.

Placebo-effect can only take you so far. It can help with everything that is perceptional: pain, depression, maybe minor inflammation etc. But it won't help to treat diseases that root in physical conditions like bacteria, tumors etc. etc.

However shammy people were making placebo for everything. Common cold, liver disease, cancer, you name it. This is highly detrimental for people and society health.

It is especially so for scammers usually bundle in some horse shit with your "medicine". Like conspirology theories (government does want you to know this ancient medicine secret...) or even religious gibberish.

So, that's why. There is a huge difference in consequences between believing in nonsense and using irrational mind effect.

Commented in Grocery store employee admits to eating $9,200 worth of deli meat, charged with felony

Is this a joke? She was probably cutting thousands of slices of deli per day. I guess more than 3 slices are just get thrown out because they fall on the floor. These are natural losses of meat that including all can be 10-20%. Eating "3 to 5 slices" does not make any difference. This should not be a criminal case at all!

What next? Perfume seller had perfume leftovers on her fingertips that she used on her neck. Sales manager estimated that over course of 20 years that adds to a gallon of Chanel #5 and costs $200 000?!

Commented in Who Actually Wrote The Bible?

It's pretty funny that people think that eliminating Bible would make the world somehow a better place. Religious missionary was one of reasons of western civilization spread. Removing religion would prevent that. Does it mean joy and friendship would spread instead? Hell no of course. Just another religion and another civilization would take its place.

It does not mean we need to retain religion now, but thinking that world without christianity would somehow be better that world with it is a funny idea. It would not, because another global religion would take its place.

Commented in Bolivian Govt Confirms Plans for Universal Healthcare in 2019

"universal and free health insurance" = stupidest idea ever. They will end up like Venezuela.

Universal is good, payed by taxes or overall insurance is good.

But "free" always ends up being bad. Always. Just another latin communism quirk.
