What I've Learned from Two Years Collecting Data on Police Killings
A few days ago, Deadspin's Kyle Wagner began to compile a list of all police-involved shootings in the U.S. He's not the only one to undertake such a project: D. Brian Burghart, editor of the Reno News & Review, has been attempting a crowdsourced national database of deadly police violence. We asked Brian to write about what he's learned from his project.

This is an extremely important project. How can a society know if they have a real problem if the information is being systematically hidden? Who can watch the watchers, when they can manipulate the system to remain out of sight? Sunlight really is the best disinfectant for the rot that the U.S. "justice" system has become. An informed public is the only true foundation for a healthy democracy.
