WhatsApp to Drop Subscription Fees for its Popular Messaging Service
WhatsApp founder Jan Koum announced Monday that the company is dropping the service’s annual subscription fee in an effort to remove the barriers some users faced in using the service. As far as a new business model, WhatsApp says it will explore ways businesses can use the service to connect with individuals, but said the goal is to avoid spam and unwanted advertising.

I actually fear what is going to replace their monetization method.
It sounds like from the various articles that they want to offer a business option. Currently you can only have one account for your phone number, so if someone wants to do both work stuff and personal stuff, they can only use their personal WhatsApp account. I think they're planning on making an option for businesses to pay a fee per head per month to use WhatsApp, particularly as wifi becomes more and more ubiquitous globally. I would personally really like this - I know my company would rather pay, say, $10 a head for additional business WhatsApp accounts for everyone rather than paying however much they do for temporary international data and text plans.
