Sounds like another fantastic book by science writer Mary Roach. If you don't know her, I recommend Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, or Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void. They're both super-informative, entertaining, filled with little factoids that make you go "Huh!", and side-splittingly funny.
She has a way of tackling great subjects and finding out these little inappropriate details about them. I have vivid memories of her description of the time the Apollo 10 astronauts joked about a turd floating in the cockpit...
I've read all her books..She is quite the delight and I highly recommend her books as well. She has a funny Ted Talk on sex as well.
