Five Things The Band Needs To Change Before The Grateful Dead Play Chicago
OK, so “need” is a bold statement. And while we’re at it, so is “The Grateful Dead.” But scratch all that for a second – in general, this past weekend’s Grateful Dead reunion shows in Santa Clara were a triumphant success. Things got off to a rough start on Saturday, and depending on who you asked, they stayed a little rough throughout the night. I streamed the 6/28 show. My thoughts/opinions:
- I agree with the author of the article on pretty much everything, especially on this: "nobody is expecting perfection from this band; just as nobody expected perfection from the original GD."
- I don't understand the Trey hate I'm seeing elsewhere. He's holding his own, even soaring occasionally, in a very tough spot. I'm not a big Phish fan, so please don't think me biased on that account. I think he gives them a spark. You can even see it on their faces sometimes.
- I hear you, "this isn't the Dead, it's crass commercialism" folks. I miss Jerry too, but my time machine is busted, and if the guys want to do it this way, even for a retirement fund boost, I'm willing to listen. They didn't do it the way I wished they had (more dates in more places would have been my preference), but I like what I'm hearing, and that's what counts for me.
- What are they going to do about all the singing problems for the recordings!? There's a lot of 'em. Bless your heart Phil, we love you, but you didn't exactly nail Eyes of the World...
- I shed a few during Brokedown Palace and He's Gone. Hard not to feel like on that particular night they were for Jerry.
