this seems like something that a person would start to regret halfway through...
also: the usage of the word "hipster" here seems inappropriate. just like almost everywhere else.
Hipster has become a buzzword in and of itself, completely agree with you that it was misused here. Its become a catchall word for anything non mainstream.
I could just do this by staying at home...

I see something like this as being on a similar level to a dominatrix. (I know that sounds crazy, but hear me out.)
I think some people have a hard time letting go of things; they get so stressed out and involved in their day to day lives that they need to put themselves in a situation where they no longer have to be in control. It seems like it could be a very freeing experience for some people.
