Energy efficient google

Blackle.com is an energy efficient version of google and has saved 5,000,000,000 watts of energy and counting! I recommend making it your homepage because it's proven to have already made a difference. It uses a black screen instead of white because black pixels take less energy to produce on your screen!

I thought using black no longer saved energy on most modern screens, except AMOLED. Is that not right?

Here's a great link to an article that can answer that well.

New advances in LCD technologies could eventually validate the belief that black is better. Newer types of LCD include a dynamic dimming capability that changes the strength of the backlight based on the image being displayed. Heap also points out that many of the new monitor technologies such as LCDs backlit with light-emitting diodes (LED), plasma screens and organic LED screens do not have a constant backlight "so we will see larger savings with Blackle as these new monitors replace the CCFL LCDs," he says.

So I take away from that it's actually quite the opposite. I mean it's a gray area but it appears as our screen technology gets better, so will the effect of blackle on power consumption.

Great submission, I've seen this before. I wish more websites were at LEAST dark-themed. I really like the deep grays that have been pervasive in media and the internet in recent months. I'm so tired of the white background they're so hard on the eyes. If every webpage had a 'night mode' that would be ideal.
