Because some (all?) people (not limited to politicians, much less Republicans) will seize on to anything in order to validate their points. Just seems like if you were running for office or publishing a book, you might take the time to verify those sources, but I guess that's crazy talk these days.
In today's GOP, if you don't like what history says, you outsource it to a "historian" who'll tell you what you want to hear.
May be very true - though I hate to limit it to Republicans, as I have a feeling they aren't the only ones who have done this.
