Political fundraising scams in 2016 spotlight
The 2016 election cycle is likely to be the most expensive yet. Billionaires George Soros and the Koch brothers are vowing to spend close to $1 billion each, thanks to successive Supreme Court decisions entangling money and speech. But data over the past few years show that big and modest spenders alike are donating more. Small contributions alone — constituting anything less than $200 — totaled $1.5 billion in the 2012 presidential election, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
