That quote from Ben Wittes infuriates me... I wish the source link wasn't dead so I could see if it's missing some context.
Probably as plain as it would seem though, and was removed from his blog because of how asinine it was.
A couple of Lawfare guys turned up at /r/Snowden, misunderstanding the purpose of the sub, oblivious to the rules of Reddit. It was not as impressive an appearance as they thought they were making. Wittes was one of them. After they bounced, had to speak up for Lawfare as a source to keep it from getting banned. They may be authoritarian apparatchiks, but they’re very busy regime apologists.
