    The seeds don't contain THC,so my thought is they were toasting them for snacks.

      Another explanation may be that they hadn't figured out the concept of culling the males in order to grow seedless weed. That would mean their buds would have been heavily seeded. If they smoked the seeded bud, the burned seed husks would be all that was left for the most part.
