Yes, our attention spans aren't what they used to be. I've even started turning off my laptop and phone when I read.
I used to feel bad when I couldn't get into a book, but eventually I realized I just wasn't interested in what the words were saying. If I want to read a book for the sake of reading the book, I'm going to have a hard time. I know that I can zoom through anything if it truly interests me, so now I try to approach hard-to-read books from a different angle until I find something about it that piques my curiosity. If not, then best read something I actually want to read.
I have what I call the "chapter 5 rule". If the author has not got me by chapter 5,the book goes into the bag and back to the library. Some books are so bad I can't get past chapter one!
When I'm reading an especially good book,as i get near the end, I read less of the book each day so it will last longer.
