If You Really Believed God Determined Morality, You'd Become An Atheist
Many of you may not know that my original goal was to be a Christian apologist, in the mold of CS Lewis. That dream got me through a BA, an MA, and half of a PhD program in the humanities before I finally determined that God didn’t exist. The biggest misconception others have had regarding my rejection of God has been that I left Christianity because I didn’t examine it closely enough, or because I gave up on it too soon. The opposite is true. I left Christianity through my belief in God, not in spite of it.

Why non-believers have every right to enjoy Christmas
To tackle the stigma of being an atheist in the US, a controversial billboard campaign is urging non-believers to 'come out' about their views.

Saudi Arabian man jailed for 10 years for tweeting his atheist beliefs
A Saudi Arabian court has ordered a man should be given 2,000 lashes and spend 10 years in prison because he ridiculed the Koran and denied the existence of God on Twitter. The 28-year-old was sentenced after the state's Islamic police discovered 600 tweets professing his atheism. Under laws introduced two years ago, atheism is defined as 'terrorism'.

Biblical Contradictions and the Christian Mind
This is a post I once made for John Loftus at Debunking Christianity and I remembered it recently, so here it is. I had been discussing the contradictions of the Bible. Many are fairly irrelevant in the scheme of things and don’t really invalidate the core claims of the Bible, only the claims of inerrancy. What it does show, however, is the rationalisation process of the average Christian.

Liar, Lunatic or Lord?
C.S. Lewis popularized the trilemma of "liar, lunatic or lord" and Josh McDowell, and others, ran with that in order to firm up a foundation that may seek to exclude other options.

The Most Fantastically Failed Prayer in History
Defenders of the Christian faith love to move discussions about their religion from objective matters to subjective ones, from measurable things to the immeasurable, and from quantifiable subjects to those which are completely nebulous—or more to the point, unfalsifiable. This is a telling compulsion, and every time it happens it reminds me why I eventually lost my ability to believe their grand narrative. I recognize these tactics because I practiced them first on myself.

The "New" Atheists Aren't
There’s nothing “new” about “the New Atheists”. Just as, at some point, we’d stopped using Vespucci’s “New World” label to denote the western hemisphere, it’s probably time to abandon the adjective ‘new’ when referencing the above-mentioned trailblazers, especially now that the trail has been well-traveled, paved over, widened to four lanes, and features a Starbucks at every off-ramp.

The Parable of the Undercover Boss
Whenever a theologian talks about how beautiful it is that Christ came to earth and died, not to appease God’s wrath, but instead, as the image of God who suffers with us, even to the point of death on the cross, I imagine that, if it were real, it would be the worst episode of Undercover Boss ever.

What is freethought?
Apparently, I need to periodically explain what freethought means, because right now I’m being helpfully informed by many people who don’t have a clue that it means thinking any damn thing you want.

Atheist Debates - Burden of proof
There seems to be a lot of confusion around the burden of proof with respect to default positions and with respect to what it is - and isn't. Here's a quick "propositional logic 101" look at the burden of proof.

Yuletide Comfort for Atheists
I appreciate the fact that group support is especially helpful when one is trying to break away from the nastier coils of religion or from personal problems like addiction. Nevertheless, in more ordinary circumstances, and without other people clustering around, there are comforts for the atheist.

Are atheists attacking the wrong god?
Burkeman contends that a new book out by theologian David Bentley Hart titled The Experience of God argues that atheists have all this time been arguing against the wrong kind of god, that of some kind of superhero like all the other gods of history, and that Hart’s god is something else entirely.

The Morals of Superman
Consider the following situation. Say some guy was gonna have his head cutoff by a terrorist. Supe’ is close by and doesn’t do a thing other than watch it. What would you think about it? Pretty awful right? Tie some kryptonite chains around him though and make it his friend that is getting murdered and it is a whole different story.
