Commented in Redefining ‘flesh-colored’ bandages makes medicine more inclusive
All I can say is, it's about time. I grew up with colored pencils that included a "skin color" pencil. Things like that are not easy to unlearn.

This is so cool! And timely - I just found a cache of Prismacolor pencils when I was cleaning out my closet.

Commented in Buddhism Explained By Alan Watts
That is 100% how I felt when I first stumbled upon Alan Watts' talks. But they are wonderful once you slow down your mind and let the meaning he is transcribing really just sit in the room with you. It's all about the slow osmosis with this one, but so incredibly accurate. I've read books on the subject that entirely missed the point yet this talk does what few writers could.
Another great book, which I've suggested many times is What The Buddha Taught by by Walpola Rahula
I cannot recommend this enough for exactly the same reason. The purpose and the spirit of these teachings is maintained in simple and down to Earth explanations. Great for both the budding Buddhist just thinking of walking the path and the Zen Master who's been on it for years.

Commented in After 40 Years, Dungeons & Dragons Still Brings Players To The Table
I'm one of those people who was playing it 40 years ago. The final lines from the story "Sitting around with your friends and participating in this kind of group storytelling exercise: actually being in a room physically sitting at a table with nothing but pencils and paper and dice. There's something very special about that, and it's kind of a social experience that's pretty hard to frankly re-create over any type of electronic media"is true. No other gaming experience has ever come close.

Commented in The Big Picture: NASA previews best Pluto image yet
And don't forget that the process to take, encode and send the picture was done mostly by a miniaturized zen garden. We reorganize small pieces of silica and get them to follow complex instructions. This is Clarke's Third Law at its best.

Commented in There's Super Mario Galaxy music in the background of this Instagram post. Is SMG the next game after Bloodborne?
We're either going to have total rage, or the quiet acceptance of SM64.Interesting to see how long his Zen lasts in those godamn bomb throwing minigame stars.

Commented in For Adults, Coloring Invites Creativity And Brings Comfort
I have a similar problem with perfectionism. If you're worried about messing up the books you might want to try photocopying individual pages and coloring those instead. That way you can just throw away the copy and start over if you feel you need to, and knowing you can do that might make the experience into something relaxing rather than stressful. I used to buy fancy journals for writing, but I was always afraid to mess them up, so I started buying shitty notebooks from the dollar store and that fixed the problem. Anyway, it's something to consider. You don't want those awesome pencils to go unused! :)
