What Makes a Great Horror Ending?

The ending of Jordan Peele’s Get Out is satisfying, well executed, and it does not last a single second longer than it needs to.

When Monsters Run: A Quick 'n Easy Morale System for D&D.

The original form of Dungeons & Dragons grew out of a tabletop wargame. As such, it had a set of morale rules: rules to determine when a troop of monsters (or men) would stay and fight.

Prolific Actor Miguel Ferrer Has Passed Away

A prolific and totally unmistakable actor with well over 100 films and television shows on his resume, Ferrer made a handful of stops in the horror genre throughout his career, notably appearing in Stephen King adaptations The Stand and The Night Flier. He also starred in three episodes of “Tales from the Crypt” in the early ’90s, and did uncredited voicework on the 1997 mini-series iteration of “The Shining.” Of course, Ferrer is known to many genre fans as FBI Agent Albert Rosenfield...

    Gaming Zines And You

There has always been a history of amateur publications in role-playing games, going back as far as Lee Gold's influential APA zine Alarums & Excursions started in the 70s. With the resurgence of zine publishing there has been an explosion of people publishing zines again, and the RPG field isn't alone in this.

What’s Your "Real Life" Strength Rating in Dungeons & Dragons?

So there I was, browsing the PHB and marveling at what the late 1970s considered optimal tabletop game design, when I discovered that, uniquely among all the character attributes, the STR (strength) score has a numerical “in real life” quantification attached.

The Long History of Wes Craven and Sam Raimi's Communication Through Film

It all started back in 1977. In The Hills Have Eyes, a torn Jaws poster was seen in the Carter family’s camper, and many took it as Wes Craven essentially saying that his movie was much scarier than anything on display in Spielberg’s hit money-maker.

If you'd like to read M.R. James and don't want to go the free ebook route for fear of typos and formatting issues, I suggest Delphi Classics. I've bought several classic ebooks from them and never had any troubles.

How a forgotten ’80s gem created the formula for video game horror

Conventional wisdom tends to ascribe the birth of survival-horror to Alone In The Dark. Infogrames’ 1992 Lovecraftian adventure bore practically every hallmark of the genre and proved a major influence on its two most prominent series, Resident Evil and Silent Hill. What’s often omitted from history books is how Dynamix’s Project Firestart, a much less conspicuous title, had been released for the aging Commodore 64 three years earlier and provided the genre’s formula.

On Halloween night, I'm usually more in the mood for some spooky fun than being scared to death, so my favorites tend to run a bit silly.

Currently, I have to watch Hocus Pocus (1993) every Halloween. I think this is the perfect scary movie to show kids who are too young for actual scary movies. I love all the Halloween imagery. Everything from spooky graveyards to trick-or-treating to the big Halloween party near the end. Bette Midler's finest role. Ernest Scared Stupid (1991) is also really high up there. And if John Carpenter's Halloween is playing on cable, I will stop everything I'm doing and watch it until the end.

Event Horizon is so damned unique. It's like the go-to suggestion for scifi horror that doesn't involve an "Alien" scenario. The world needs more Haunted Houses in Space.

1408 is one of my favorite short stories! The movie's pretty darn good too. John Cusack and Stephen King recently teamed up again to make "Cell," which is supposed to have a lot of 1408 easter eggs and references hidden throughout the movie.

The point is that if you give better tags, the recommendations you get will be better and the system will improve over time as the right associations are strengthened.

I had no idea. Thanks for the advice!

Edit: I just re-read this part: "Tribe mods can better indicate what key terms relate to their subjects." How would one go about doing that? I'm all for putting in a little extra work to help the search faeries. :D

    Halloween D&D Adventure

So for Halloween we are hosting a D&D 5th edition game. 1st step is to create a theme. Halloween! Done! Nope, that’s not enough. So I’d like to make it scary, and also this really is initiatory, so it doesn’t have to be overly complicated. How about find and defeat the evil in the Haunted House. What is the Evil, well I will need to figure all of this out as I build this up.
