First we have to demonstrate that FTL is possible. The next step is to establish permanent colonies in orbit, then the moon and other planets. Establish mining operations in the asteroid belt -- with robot ships if necessary. If we can work out a way to put humans into a hibernation state and safely revive them then there's no limit to where we send ourselves.
That's a great list! It actually sounds like a project list from NASA. ;) Hopefully, we go ahead and start working on the colonies and the robots while others work on that FTL research. We have the knowledge, technology, and capability to make these a reality in a very short time. I think we need to focus on improving our robotics & ROV capabilities, the exploration of our solar system will be incredibly easier to explore.
I also think we need to increase the research into gravity. Is it a force? A not yet discovered particle? A reaction to the curvature of space-time itself? On top of all that, the possibility of manipulating gravity could have many great applications, possible the FTL engines.
