The Great Rosogolla Revolt: When a Bengal CM Banned Bengali Sweets
50 years ago, a particularly startling ban was imposed, and had lasting consequences. Bans are rarely imposed on popular foods, especially those seen as emblematic of a community. And few foods are more emblematic of Bengal than sweets based on channa (split milk solids) like sandesh and rosogollas. Yet on August 23, 1965 such milk sweets were banned in Calcutta under the West Bengal Channa Sweets Control Order imposed by Congress chief minister Prafulla Chandra Sen.

Recipe: Heavenly Lemon Bars with Almond Shortbread Crust — Dessert Recipes from The Kitchn
I've been holding out on you. I know, I'm sorry. I don't even know why — because these lemon bars ... oh man, they are meant to be shared. In fact, keeping them to yourself would be very dangerous. The truth is that I've been making this lemon curd recipe on its own for years, and I've been tinkering with my favorite shortbread recipe for years. Now, finally, I've had the presence of mind to bring them together. No need to thank me — you're welcome.

Everyone Likes Red and Pink Candies Best—and Sweets Manufacturers Have Finally Caught On
There’s an Internet meme floating around—Miley Cyrus posted it to Instagram a few months ago—that implores, “Don’t ever let someone treat you like a yellow Starburst. You are a pink Starburst.” The message acknowledges and plays on a widely held belief: that pink and red candies are the best...

Perception of sweetness in food determined by genetics
A single set of genes determines a person's sensitivity to sweetness, and access to sugar in childhood has little or no effect on sensitivity, according to a new study. The study also showed no difference in perception of sweetness between natural sugar and non-caloric chemical substitutes.

Grab Your Chopsticks: It’s Sushi Cupcake Time!
When we initially set out to tackle this bit of sweetness, we had big ideas about sprinkles, hand-rolled fondant fish, and nonpareils. Then we realized gummy candies are where it’s at! The Futuristic Arnold Palmer Cocktail
My dad wasn't much of a drinker. He drank coffee in the morning, and water during the day. But I could imagine him enjoying an Arnold Palmer - a combination of tea and lemon juice - at a party or barbecue. He was also very interested in science, so I think he would have been amused by a blue tea that would turn colors with the addition of lemon juice. It's a futuristic cocktail that certainly didn't exist during Dad's lifetime, but I think he'd approve.

All of that seems to fade as you enter your adult years. It's kind of sad, but luckily we have a solution- a way to bring the magic back. It's booze. By adding booze.

Wild Wineberries - The Tastiest Invasive Around
They may be invasive but wineberries taste waaaay too good to yank up by the roots. Native to Japan, northern China and Korea, wineberries were introduced to North America and Europe in the late 1800s as an ornamental and for the potential to create hybrid raspberries and quickly escaped from cultivation to become a flavorful fugitive.
