The NYPD robot pooch Digidog got a new leash on life Tuesday — and police leaders insist it’s not the dystopian surveillance nightmare it was made out to be the first time New Yorkers got a look at it. Two years after the robot landed the NYPD in the doghouse with civil rights advocates, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell promised to keep New Yorkers abreast of how the operations of the cyber mutt and two other tech tools pilot tested.

Fires from exploding e-bike batteries multiply in NYC — sometimes fatally
Four times a week on average, an e-bike or e-scooter battery catches fire in New York City. Sometimes, it does so on the street, but more often, it happens when the owner is recharging the lithium ion battery. A mismatched charger won't always turn off automatically when the battery's fully charged, and keeps heating up. Or, the highly flammable electrolyte inside the battery's cells leaks out of its casing and ignites, setting off a chain reaction.

It is illegal for New Yorkers under age 21 to purchase a can of whipped cream, according to recently-passed state law. The law, which went into effect in November 2021, is meant to prevent teenagers from using canned whipped cream to inhale nitrous oxide, otherwise known as "whippets."

While 19 states have legalized recreational weed, New York is the first to offer its initial dispensary licenses solely to entrepreneurs with marijuana convictions. It’s a move aimed at offering an advantage to people, disproportionately in Black and brown communities, harmed by the war on drugs.

The ElliQ bots, according to a recent article in Smithsonian Magazine, were created to help elderly individuals who live alone. ElliQ functions similarly to Alexa and Siri in that it can make small conversation, create reminders, and answer queries.

New York is now a step away from banning Bitcoin mining for two years
The state of New York had recently passed a bill to introduce a ban on proof of work mining. It prohibited any new Bitcoin mining operations in the state. Passed by the State assembly in April 2022, the proposal was to ban mining operations of Bitcoin for the next two years. The bill is now headed to the governor’s office where the governor shall give his assent and turn the bill into effective law.
