Yarn from Slaughterhouse Waste
ETH researchers have developed a yarn from ordinary gelatine that has good qualities similar to those of merino wool fibers. Now they are working on making the yarn even more water resistant. The method was developed in cooperation with the Advanced Fibers Laboratory at Empa St. Gallen. Stössel was able to spin the fibres into a yarn from which textiles can be manufactured.

The Latest Twist in Textiles? A Spinning Resurgence
Like knitting and crocheting, spinning — the process of twisting fibers together to make yarn — is enjoying a comeback. By spinning yarn yourself, you can control its weight, texture and color. Ferguson's radical knitters: "If someone asks me what I’m doing, I say, 'I’m knitting for black liberation' "
The Yarn Mission seeks to “use yarn to promote action and change to eradicate racism, sexism, and other systems of oppression”. The group, founded by CheyOnna Sewell, a PhD student in criminology, seeks to spark conversation about race and police brutality by engaging with curious passersby as they knit, all while providing a comforting activity for beleaguered activists.

Creativity Through Destruction
So yeah, I talk a lot about knitting and how great it is and, sure, it has health benefits and it's a mindful activity and every night I reach it for it to unwind at the end of a long day, but a huge part of why I love knitting is because if I need to, if I want to, I can start over.

Judy Greer on Guerrilla Camping and Knitting in Traffic
When I moved to L.A., I’m embarrassed to say, I smoked cigarettes. I read in a fashion magazine that one way to quit smoking was to take up knitting, so I went to Suss Design on Beverly and signed up for classes. I’ve been knitting since I got here, and it worked. I quit.

Cabaret looks at wartime history through knitting
"Stick to your knittin’, kitten I’ve got a job to do." It’s little-known history, but thousands of songs like this encouraging women to knit were popular during the First and Second World Wars. Knitting even altered fashion: Dresses were designed with large pockets so women could always have their yarn and needles on them; and, for the first time ever, women carried tote bags instead of little clutch purses.

"Coachella" Top: Knitting Pattern
Coachella is hot! The dry heat of the Coachella Valley desert in Southern California inspired this cool racerback tank. Knit in a slightly looser-than-specified gauge, the construction of this tank beats the heat with a draped neckline and a mostly bare back. A perfect look for basking by the pool in Palm Springs or for rocking the Coachella Valley Music Festival down in Indio.
