Heavy rain and gales of more than 100mph returned to Britain overnight — just days after the last storm caused Christmas misery for tens of thousands of people. The Met Office has issued yellow and amber weather warnings, indicating “severe or hazardous weather” with potential to “cause danger to life or widespread disruption” and urged many people to prepare for flooding.

When temperatures plummet these Toronto Island residents lace up their skates and glide across Lake Ontario
On New Year’s Day my son and I skated on Grenadier Pond in High Park; alas, the freeze-thaw cycle left it too bumpy. Good news came from Mr. Farquhar, one of Toronto’s devotees of skating on natural ice. By day, he is director for the Office of the Worker Advisor at the Ontario Ministry of Labour. On his down time, Mr. Farquhar and Ms. McDonnell, Toronto Island residents since 1981, love to skate on Toronto Harbour. A few years ago he added me to 90 people on the email list for his “ice report.”

As temperatures dropped into the low single digits Monday, officials say the man walked into a motel and asked the clerk to call police.

Yes, It’s Cold. But Wind Chill Is No Way to Measure It.
If the weather makes headlines only when it's horrendous out, wind chill is its PR agent. This week, when temperatures in New York City dropped to single digits, newspapers and TV meteorologists breathlessly reported that the wind chill had hit minus 11. In Ohio, they told us, the thermometers read close to zero, but gusts of cold air made it feel like 25 below. Banner stories proclaimed a wind chill of 35 below in Chicago.
